Today (Friday 10 October) is #WorldHomelessDay.In 2024-2025 we supported over 27 individuals into alternative accommodation after they were reported to be sleeping rough in Teignbridge. Our outreach team is dedicated to making a positive difference to the lives of those rough sleeping. Lucy has shared her story:🗨️ “I became homeless after I lost my flat due to my child having to move in with my sister. I got into rent arrears which resulted in me being evicted.“I was homeless for over two years, which consisted of sofa surfing, roughing sleeping on the streets and living in in tents. “My mental health got worse because I was mixing with the wrong people and I had a boyfriend who was emotionally and physically abusive. I was not safe anywhere and was not safe with anyone in my life. “My physical health was also very poor due to my drug additions and sleeping rough.“I ended up asking the council for help and I was placed in temporary accommodation with my partner. After a couple of months, a property came up under the Supported Temporary Accommodation & Resettlement (STAR) scheme. My partner and I separated after I moved in and I took the tenancy on. Once I was in STAR, I had my support worker supporting me. "When I was homeless everything was just so much harder. My mental and physical health were so poor and I felt like I didn’t want to be here. “Being in STAR gave me a lifeline I didn’t have before and made me feel like a person and gave me an opportunity to get my child back.“I like my life now, I am clean from drugs, and my health is better. I now have a stable home of my own and I am enjoying decorating my new home. I am now thinking of the next stages of my life and what I can do next.“I want people to know that when I got put into STAR accommodation, I wouldn't have got as far as I have without my support worker and the support and care that they gave me and the confidence they gave me. I am so thankful to have had them.” Help and advice is available for anyone facing homelessness on our website – link in comments below.👇 ... See MoreSee Less
